My Mentorship Experience

leave a comment »

I have explored several aspects of physical therapy and seemed to like the lifestyle of a private practice the most. It was challenging finding and then asking a professional to allow me to shadow him but I found a local physical therapist who was kind enough to show me the ropes. The first few weeks that I shadowed him I simply observed him to get a feel for what he does in a general sense. Soon, I focused in on specific skills every week. One important skill I learned was making the patients feel comfortable when they came into the clinic. My mentor showed me useful ways to frame the conversation to make patients feel at ease. This lesson was very useful for me because I was not sure how to interact with patients in such a formal context but now I feel much more relaxed conversing with them.

I found a Mentor!

leave a comment »

Finding a mentor for me was a difficult process. I didn’t know what exactly I wanted to do when I first entered this program. I had to observe different professions. When I finally found that Physical Therapy was what I wanted to do, I had to call around different hospitals/clinics/retirement homes in order to find someone that was willing to let me observe them. I hoped they could teach me all they know about the profession so that I would have a good idea what a physical therapist does. It took awhile for me to find a mentor, but I finally did after a long search.

Most Important Questions

leave a comment »

I read Ajahn Brahms book: Who Ordered this truckload of dung?

and in it he wrote a story of the emperor and the three most important questions in life:

When is the most important time?
Who is the most important person?
What is the most important thing to do?

The answer he outlined was:
Now
The person your with
To Care

today I was scattered and tired and didn’t get much done at all. Yet just this evening I asked myself the three questions.
Q: What is the most important time?
A: Now
Q: Who is the most important person?
A: I’m not with anyone so that’s me.
Q: What is the most important thing to do?
A: To care.

At that moment I was inspired to share this with by starting a blog, something I’ve meant to do for a while and share this with you. The three questions have been very useful tools in my practice.

Anyone else have any experience with this or any other good mental tool?
